Research

Welcome to the Jiang lab! The goal of our lab is to develop innovative strategies for the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases. Our studies take a multidisciplinary approach, by integrating stem cells, biomaterials, vascular biology, 3D printing technology, and tissue engineering.

Research Area

Despite medical advances, there is a continuing threat of vascular diseases. Five of the Taiwan's top ten leading causes of death, such as heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and nephropathy, are blood vessel-related diseases. On top of that, population aging further exacerbates the situation. These have tremendous impacts on the health and welfare of people in Taiwan's society. Therefore, the development of strategies for prevention or treatment of vascular diseases is in urgent need. To this end, the emerging regenerative medicine technology might be a promising preventive and/or therapeutic strategy. Based on interdisciplinary technologies, including the research of stem cells and their derivatives, vascular biology, biomaterials, tissue engineering, 3D printing technology, etc., our lab aims to develop innovative strategies for the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases. Our studies focus on the following:

1. To develop pluripotent stem cells differentiation into vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells as a therapeutic cell source for the treatment of vascular disease;
2. To utilize stem cells combined with biomaterials and 3D printing technology to fabricate novel vascular constructs for the regeneration and repair of ischemic vascular diseases;
3. To adopt induced pluripotent stem cells for establishing in vitro vascular disease models to identify key pathogenic factors or to screen for drug candidates;
4. To establish induced pluripotent stem cells from patients with genetic vascular diseases and to differentiate them into vascular cells for investigating the pathogenic mechanisms or novel therapeutic strategies;
5. To use stem cells or their specific cell derivatives to develop emerging diagnostic or therapeutic strategies for vascular diseases.
